Linköping’s Castle and Cathedral Museum

Welcome to Linköping’s Castle and Cathedral museum! Take part in Linköping’s medieval and religious history and learn more about how the medieval bishop’s residence became a royal castle and a residence for the county governor.

Linköping Castle dates back to the 12th century and is Sweden’s oldest inhabited secular building. It was originally built as a bishop’s residential palace. It became a royal castle in the 16th century and later the workplace and residence for the county governor. Linköping’s Cathedral church is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cathedrals, its construction beginning in the early 13th century. The location has however housed a wood and stone church dating back to even earlier times.

The Diocese of Linköping, the bishops, and the cathedral church were the foundation of the development of the city of Linköping during the Middle Ages.

Our museum contains many interesting and dramatic stories about the cathedral, the castle, diocese and city, and the people who have lived and worked here. We invite you to look, listen, and experience its rich history.
